Why the middle is the rational default

Under $25 buys you a diagnostic: it tells you what you do not know. Over $400 buys you hand-holding: instruction, materials, and someone to call. The $79 to $129 tier buys the thing most test-takers actually need: a structured, state-specific guide with practice questions and explanations, in a file you keep.

That is the tier our guides sit in, and we are not subtle about it: this page lives on our site, and the price ladder is the honest case for the middle. If you want a course with an instructor, the $150 to $400 tier is real value too. If you want everything handled, the top tier exists for that.

Where the hidden costs hide

  • Tab packs: $15 to $20, sold separately by most book-based providers.
  • Reference books: $80 to $140 each, and some courses assume you already own them.
  • Refundable deposits: $700 to $1,500 on book rentals, on top of the rental price.
  • In-course upsells: one provider advertises a $199.99 upgrade inside its own course.
  • The free asterisk: one PSI package advertised free practice exams that required a $40 fee behind the advertised icon, according to 2026 buyer reviews.

A note on guarantees

Price and promises interact. A $129 course with a strict no-pass refund can cost more in practice than its sticker price once the required books and tabs are added, and the refund covers the course only. A $297 course with pass in the guarantee name may only extend your access instead of refunding you. Read the guarantee page before the pricing page.
