Best contractor exam prep in 2026: what the money buys
An independent, source-checked roundup of contractor exam prep providers: PSI, RocketCert, 1 Exam Prep, and more. Prices, formats, and guarantees compared side by side.
By PixelSunset
Every contractor exam prep provider claims to be the best value, the fastest path, or the safest bet. Nobody independent had lined them up side by side, so we did: eight providers, one table, prices checked on each company's own website on September 30, 2026, from $19.95 practice tests to $4,589 packages.
A disclosure up front: Pixel Sunset sells the study guides in the table below. We published this page because no independent roundup existed, and we would rather compete on a level field than in the dark. No provider paid for placement.
This page does not crown a single winner. The right prep depends on your budget, your state, and how you study. What it does show is what the money buys at each price tier, where the fine print lives, and which marketing claims you can actually check.

Prices rounded to the nearest dollar and checked on each provider's own website on September 30, 2026. PrepPass shows some prices only inside its checkout flow; where we could not verify a price in crawlable text, the table says so.
What the money buys at each tier
- Under $25: a diagnostic. A single official practice test, a short question booklet, or a free question bank. Enough to find your weak topics, not enough to learn them.
- $79 to $129: a structured study guide. A state-specific PDF with practice questions and explanations, in a file you keep. This is the tier our guides sit in, alongside PrepPass's file model in California.
- $129 to $300: a full online course. Lessons, practice simulations, and instructor support, usually for one state or exam.
- $300 to $1,500: courses plus materials and live instruction. Books, tab packs, and cram sessions enter here, and the sticker price rarely includes all of them.
- $1,500 and up: full service. Tutoring, licensing specialists, and application processing for people who want the license handled for them.
The guarantee fine print
Two providers advertise a no-pass, no-pay style promise, and the two promises are not the same. RocketCert refunds the course cost only, not books, tabs, or shipping, and only if you test within a year, finish every lesson, pass every quiz, pass the simulation five times, and buy every recommended reference. @HomePrep advertises No Pass, No Pay in its product boilerplate, but we could not verify the exact refund terms.
Contractor Training Center's guarantee is extended course access until you pass, not money back. The Exam Pros uses Pass Guaranteed language in page titles while its policy states all sales are final. 1 Exam Prep explicitly disclaims any guarantee. Nobody in the market publishes verified data on how often guarantees pay out.
The review problem
Five of the eight providers have no meaningful third-party review presence: no Trustpilot, no rated BBB profile, no Sitejabber footprint. Their pass-rate claims, 98.7%, 90%, and 99% depending on whose page you read, are not independently substantiated, and student counts vary from page to page on the same site.
PSI is the exception with a real review corpus: about 4.1 out of 5 from roughly 13,243 Sitejabber reviews. Recent reviews document real problems too, including content errors left uncorrected for weeks and a fee dispute over an advertised free practice exam. Treat company-hosted ratings and unsubstantiated pass rates accordingly.
How this comparison was researched
Prices were checked on each provider's own website on September 30, 2026, and rounded to the nearest dollar. Review presence was checked on Trustpilot, the BBB, Sitejabber, and Google. Where evidence was thin, the table says so instead of guessing. Prices change; confirm the current price before you buy.
